First two days of Walking on the Camino Portuguese
We started our first day April 25 at Sao Pedro de Rates. April 25 is a national holiday to celebrate the Carnation Revolution in 1974. It was pretty busy with cyclist for awhile. We were prepared for rain & walked through several downpours. We stopped for lunch at-a restaurant in Pedra Furada where the portions were huge. Had grilled octopus. Yummy. After lunch our bus driver took us up to Monte Franqueira to experience the lookout where you can see the ocean. Then we walked down through a eucalyptus forest, gently undulating woodlands, charming villages into Barcelos where the legend of the roasted cock that rose from the table of the judge who wrongly condemned a pilgrim to Santiago to hang at a nearby gallows. The pilgrim was saved by the miraculous intervention of St. James. The Corel has become a symbol of Barcelos and Portugal. We walked a total of about 20 km according to my Fitbit, about 18 km according to our leader Gary’s GPS.
